Welding of metallic mixed compounds with high mechanical energy

Veröffentlicht von: INSTAL Engineering GmbH, 11.12.2016

Welding of metallic mixed compoundswith high mechanical energy. Like friction welding and diffusion welding, this method allows to connect dissimilar metals.

In addition to welding, it is also possible to crimp, to reshape or to cut with modified parameters or geometries using the same manufacturing process.

Companies in the manufacturing industry are constantly calling for optimizing production processes to improve quality, to shorten cycle times and to lower material consumption. This is necessary in order to save costs and gain acceptance on the market. But also from a environmental point of view, it is nowadays desirable to use the materials as efficiently as possible and to achieve a sustainable use of raw materials. Therefore, it is amazing that a production process, whose foundations were laid in 1924 and which offers so many advantages, is so little known in the industry. Therefore, there hardly is any literature and the method is rarely used.

Terminology

This joining process is documented in the literature and in current publications under a variety of names. Furthermore, the term „ Magnetimpuls-Schweißen“ is used, which has been translated from the English term „Magnetic Pulse Welding (MPW)“.
Other names are „Elektromagnetische Pulstechnologie (EMPT)“ („Electromagnetic Pulse Technology“), „Magnetumformung“ („Magnetic Forming“), „Schockschweißen“ und „Elektromagnetische Umformung“ („Electromagnetic Forming“).
The standard DIN EN ISO 4063:2011-03 defines the German designation “Magnetpulsschweißen“.
